Glossary of Terms for Building Official, Inspector, and Plans Examiner Certification Requirements

 
1,600 hours - equals approximately one year of work, using 40 hours per week, making exceptions for vacations, sick leave, etc.
 
A-level structures - structures regulated by the Oregon Structural Specialty Code that require a state fire and life safety plan review or are required to be designed by an Oregon-licensed architect or engineer, pursuant to ORS Chapter 671.
 
Another jurisdiction - a federal, tribal, state or local agency with authority to administer one or more construction codes or standards and approve inspector certification.  Doesn't include local municipalities within the State of Oregon.
 
B-level structures - structures regulated by the Oregon Structural Specialty Code that do not require a state fire and life safety plan review and are not required to be designed by an Oregon-licensed architect or engineer, pursuant to ORS Chapter 671.
 
Design experience - professional engineering or technical design of systems or components that require computations, research, or special knowledge.
 
Diversified work - varied experience in structural steel, complex wood framing, and concrete or masonry construction.
 

Education program - minimum two-year diversified or one-year focused building inspection technology program administered by an educational institution.

 
HVAC - heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems.
 
In-training program - BCD-approved on-the-job training and practical evaluation program designed to train a person to qualify to sit for examination in a particular code.
 
Legal experience - experience gained under required licenses, certifications, and registrations.  Does not include work performed without proper credentials.
 
Plan review - the review of construction plans to determine and document compliance with construction regulations and standards, not including estimation or contractor use.
 
Training program - a one- and two-family dwelling plans examiner or inspector on-the-job cross-training program and practical evaluation that meets the minimum training and education requirements established by the division.
