| What is a site-specific interpretation? |
A site-specific interpretation is an interpretation of a specialty code provision that applies to a single project. They provide an explanation of the meaning or intent of specific code provisions
or sections as they apply to work permitted by the local jurisdiction. |
| |
| Does a site-specific interpretation replace local interpretations? |
| No. The site-specific interpretation process assists local jurisdictions when they need clarification on the meaning or intent of a specialty code provision. Local interpretation processes remain
unchanged. |

|
Who may ask for a site-specific interpretation?
|
| Because a site-specific interpretation assists local jurisdictions in implementing the state building code at a specific site, only the building official may petition for a site-specific interpretation. |

How does a building official ask for a site-specific interpretation?
|
|
All site-specific interpretations begin as a request "in writing" (some sort of letter or memorandum) or on a division approved form. The writing or the form contains
the following information:
- Description of events that led to the need for a site-specific interpretation request.
- Citation to the specialty code section (or sections) that need interpreted.
- The physical location of the building site. A street address will suffice here.
If a building official omits some information, the division may still accept a mostly complete request.
The chief and the building official work together to interpret the specialty
code request and issue a decision within 30 calendar days of the initial
request.
